What Is Work Healthy SA?

Work Healthy SA (Trabaje Sano SA) is a local research project exploring how diabetes impacts job performance, productivity, and workforce participation in San Antonio. Our mission is to help create healthier workplaces by listening to real workers and understanding their experiences.

Who is this research for?

-People with Diabetes type 2 or Pre Diabetes

-Ages 18-70

-Part of the working force

-Any gender or language

-Not on insulin or dialysis

-Has a mobile phone

-Any insurance status (Including uninsured)

What we offer:

-Free supplies and the opportunity to keep the glucometers after completing the study.

-Tools to manage your health from home.

-Support & connection to local resources.

-Nutrition guidance

What you need to do:

-Use a free glucometer at least 16 times/month for 6 months.

-Answer a few short monthly questions about your routine.

Project Purpose

Work Healthy SA gives insight on the impact of diabetes on your work life, and the options to understand and learn about the disease.

This NSF Build and Broaden program is designed to build knowledge and community relationships around the problem of Type II Diabetes.

Belinda Román, PhD, Associate Professor of Economics, at St. Mary’s University, is the lead investigator for this research into the impact of Type II Diabetes on Workforce Participation. The research is funded by the National Science Foundation Build and Broaden Program (NSF Award # 2315921).
